“The challenge is to focus on the work, not on the fear that comes from doing the work.”

- Sometimes I listen to Seth Godin’s Poke the Box on my way to work…

I have seen a lot of students lately in panic-mode.  You will find an internship, it is not privilege, nor a gift. It is hard work.

The time it takes to reflect on what you want to learn, identify a list of internship sites, prepare (curate your portfolio/work), apply, interview…this is the work you need to challenge yourself to focus on - not the fear of the unknown, the questions you can’t answer.

“Reject the tyranny of picked. Pick yourself.”

Pick you, pick the internship that is good for you (to build on your existing knowledge & develop your communications skills - which is one of the #1 thing those hiring are looking for….great communication skills).

Picking you means developing your level of self awareness (what do you know about what you want and who you are?)  These questions factor into where you ultimately will apply, and keep applying.

“Please stop waiting for a map. We reward those who draw maps, not those who follow them.”

Hi!! I have an internship next week to help a photographer in his gallery. He owns it and it is informal, every video i have seen of him, he is always wearing blue jeans. What should I wear for the interview? I want to seem professional, but not out of place.
Anonymous asked

Great question!  Hi!  First - Congrats on the interview, that is a good start.

There are ways to look casual without being casual, please..don’t wear jeans to an interview, ever.  In the same vein, (if you are a girl) if you have not mastered walking and running in heels, stick to flats.  The more comfortable you are, the easier it will be to answer interview questions.

Case in point, I had an interviewee yesterday complain for 5 minutes that her feet hurt in her shoes - I am not hiring her - For many other reasons, but I can’t believe she wasted 5 minutes of interview time to complain - I need positive people around me!

OK back to the subject - there are many ways to be casual and professional.  You can wear jeans the second day on the job, why do you have to the first time you meet?

I am just assuming you are a woman, so if you aren’t let me know and I will send male options your way.

If you wear a skirt or dress, wear opaque tights (stockings) with dresses/skirts that are above your knee, keep it classy.

Below are some great options - don’t forget- your friends can help  if you need to borrow an article of clothing for an interview.  I always wore the best of the apartment to my interviews (most clothes weren’t mine because I had paint all over everything I owned).

You aren’t sure yet - what the photographer prefers his staff to wear - so err on the side of caution and respect by taking the time to look professional.

After you get the offer is when you can ask things like- - “what do you prefer your interns and staff to wear” or “are tattoos OK?”.  You will be surprised what you learn and people will be impressed you took the time to ask and you care about your appearance and how it reflects on his business and his clients.

Casual, ready to go great interview clothing options:
